Makeup for Mature Beauties Face of the Day Series. Episode 3 the Bold Look

Hey doll hey! How’s your day/night going? Great I hope. I’m still in some pain. It’s been raining everyday here in Florida and that really wrecks havoc with my Fibromyalgia. I have a decent amount of energy today but the pain is just to high to really do anything special today… no baking or sewing for me today… I chose to use my spoons to play with makeup… after all it is my first hobby love.

As I explained in my other posts the inspiration for this new series is all thanks to my Instagram friend and fellow Fibro Warrior called Annette. She reached out to me on Instagram and mentioned that she was hoping to get some makeup ideas from me but said that she is 64 and so she felt that she needed to be sensible. To which I replied Makeup is timeless and all inclusive and can be experimented with at any age. 💜 You never have to be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and explore the beauty world! But I also didn’t want her to feel like she couldn’t do a great job without going too glam or bold… so I told her I would do a Makeup for Mature Beauties series just for her and asked if I could use her name to give her credit for the series and she said yes and that she was excited to know that I would be willing to do this for her. And so… this new series is born…

For today’s look I am focusing on a bold look that any age can wear but was specifically created with the over 40 crowd in mind. I can’t think of anything more bold than a great smokey eye with just a pop of shimmer.

For today’s eye look I used 2 shades in the Catrice Cosmetics Basic Bae Palette ($15 at Ulta) and 6 shades from the E.L.F. Earth & Ocean Palette ($15 on their website). I chose to do a smokey green eye, but really a smokey eye can have any shade you choose. I will give you suggestions in the Final Thoughts section of this blog post on ways you can switch it up to suite your tastes.

Today’s scent is Calvin Klein Deep Euphoria (released in 2016). The scent notes are:

• Top Notes: Cascalone (an ingredient synthesized in a lab that adds a fresh aquatic feel), Mandarin Leaves and White Pepper.
• Middle Notes: Black Rose, Peony, Orchid and Lotus
• Base Notes: Patchouli, Mineral Woods and Musk
• Finishing Notes: Pomegranate, Persimmon, Geranium and Jasmine

Ok… time to dive into the walk through for today’s Face of the Day….

Base:

I first primed and than let the primer set until )I was finished my eyes using Good Molecules Silicone-Free Priming Moisturizer ($14 on their website and on the Beautylish website). I prepped my pores and tip of my nose using Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer ($39 at Ulta and Sephora). I then primed my face using Wet n Wild Photo Focus Dewy Face Primer ($5.99 at Ulta). I contoured the face using Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Contour Wand ($38 at Sephora and on the Beautylish website) in the shade Medium Deep using a fluffy shader brush to blend it in. For foundation today I am using HourGlass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick ($46 at Sephora) in the shade Buff (light, warm undertone) and a dense flat top foundation brush. I then took my setting spray and spritzed my whole face and waited a few seconds and bounced my beauty sponge over my whole face to press the foundation into my skin flawlessly. I bronzed my face using Tarte SEA Breezy Cream Bronzer ($29 at Ulta and Sephora) in the shade Grace Bay and a dense bronzer brush. My cream highlight today is Rare Beauty Positive Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight($22 at Sephora) in the shade Mesmerize (rose bronze) that I applied it with a fluffy crease brush. I color corrected my undereyes (just the dark areas at the back part of my undereyes and along the middle of my lash line) using the Believe Beauty Brighten Up Color Correcting Concealer ($4.00 only at Dollar General Stores) in the shade Light/Medium . For concealer today I am using (just a dab for both eyes and to straighten out my nose contour) the NYX Born to Glow Radiant Concealer ($9.00 at Ulta) in the shade Fair and I applied both the corrector and the concealer with a concealer brush. I then took my setting spray and spritzed my beauty sponge and tapped out my undereyes and the I immediately set my undereyes using just a touch of Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder for Under Eyes ($28 at Ulta and Sephora) in the shade #1 (fair to medium skin tones). I set the rest of my face with a very light layer of Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder ($39 at Ulta and Sephora) in the shade Translucent (for fair to medium skin tones) using a fluffy powder brush. * For drier skin or more mature skin just simple powder the areas of the face where oils form naturally… the nose, chin, and center of the forehead* I touched up my bronzer using the Malibu Glitz Face Powder ($1 on the Shop Miss A website) in the shade Honey using a round top powder brush. *For drier skin or more mature skin skip this step as the extra powder will just emphasize the texture of your skin*  For my touch up powder I am using Physician’s Formula Natural Defense Setting the Tone Finishing Powder ($14.99 at Ulta) in the shade Light I pair this with a retractable kabuki brush for touch ups and I only touch up the sides of my nose and maybe the center of my forehead if it needs it.

Eyes:

I set my brows using Believe Beauty Eyebrow Styling Gel ($4 only at Dollar General Stores) in the shade Clear, I let the brows set for a few minutes  and then filled in my bows using the E.L.F. Ultra Precise Brow Pencil ($5 on the ELF website and at Target and Walmart) in the shade Deep Brown. I carved out my brows and primed my lids using the P. Louise Base (£10/$12.85 on their website) in the shade #0.5 Rumour using a smaller detailer brush and the lightest amount of the base. For today’s eye look I used 2 shades from the Catrice Cosmetics Basic Bae Palette ($15 at Ulta) and 6 shades from the E.L.F. Earth & Ocean Palette ($15 on their website). I started by setting my brow line using the shade a flat shader brush and the color #Basic (Soft ivory – matte) from the Catrice palette. For my transition shade is used a fluffy crease brush and the color #MOTD (soft light-toned brown – matte) from the same palette. I then switched to the E.L.F. palette for the remaining of the look. For my crease shade I used a denser crease brush and the combo of the colors Desert Storm (khaki – matte) and Spruced Up (deep olive green – matte). To define the outer v of the crease and to deepen up the outer 1/3 of the mobile lids I used a mid ranged pencil brush and the color Can’t Kelp It (dusty brown green – matte). For the middle 1/3 of my mobile lid I used a dense flat shader brush and more of the color Spruced Up (deep olive green – matte). For the inner 1/3 of the mobile lid I used the same brush and the color Sahara (yellow based light green – metallic). For my lower lash line I used a small pencil brush and more of the color Desert Storm (khaki – matte) and then using a flat push brush I deepened my lash line using more of the color Can’t Kelp It (dusty brown green – matte). I highlighted the inner corners of my eyes using the smallest pencil brush I had and the color Sun Yourself (yellow – metallic). I then tight lined my upper and lower waterlines using Sephora Collection 12hr Colorful Contour Eyeliner ($11 at Sephora) in the shade #14 Cocoa (Chocolate Brown). I coated my upper and lower lashes in The Balm What’s Your Type Mascara (discontinued on the balm’s website but can be found at Kholes and on Amazon)in the shade Black. I chose not to wear false lashes today because my eyes are a bit watery today… typically with a smokey eye I always wear falsies because it adds another layer of smoke to the eye look.

Cheeks and Lips

For blush today I chose Tarte Sugar Rush – Beach Cheeks Cream Blush ($15 at Ulta) in the shade Beaches & Cream (peachy pink) that I applied with a duo fiber brush and applied it in the draping technique where you wrap the blush around the temples. I touched up my highlighter using the Essence Pure Nude Highlighter ($4.99 at Ulta) in the shade #10 Be My Highlight (champagne) using a highlighter brush. *For drier skin or more mature skin skip this step as the extra powder will just emphasize the texture of your skin* I lined and filled in my lips using ColourPop Lippie Pencil ($6 o their website) in the shade BFF3 (deep nude) and I also filled in the sides of my lips to contour my lips today. I topped my lips off with MAC Matte Lipstick ($19 at MAC and Ulta) in the shade Velvet Teddy (deep-toned beige). I then gave my face a spritz of setting spray and used my hand held fan to dry my face almost all the way and then I bounced my beauty sponge over the whole face to help melt all the face products into the skin better.

Final Thoughts:

Remember that our goal is to have glowy radiant skin so when using the loose setting powder try to use the lightest amount and sparingly apply it to the areas where your makeup normally wears off during the day… the chin, around the nose, the center of the forehead… try to avoid the cheeks and the area above the brows in the temple area… these are the spots where light naturally hits so those are the areas you want to have the most dewy look to and since we aren’t using a powder blush or bronzer you don’t want those areas to go dull or muted because of the loose powder.

The key to a great smokey eye is to have several undertones of the same shade and a brow bone highlight (typically in a cream or ivory shade). For instance, if you want a brown smokey eye start out with a deep peach as your transition shade and then chose 5 to 6 brown shades starting with the medium toned brown for the crease, then the deepest shade for the lid or if you want to do a smokey with a pop of shimmer do the deepest shade for the outer v of the crease and the outer 1/3 of the mobile lid, then move to the lightest shade of brown for the middle 1/3 of the mobile lid and a shimmer shade in a brighter brown metallic for the inner 1/3 of the mobile lid. Use the mid toned brown for the lower lash line and the deepest brown to darken up the lash line just under the lashes. Lastly use a bright shimmer or metallic shade to highlight the inner corners of your eyes and presto… you have a beautiful smokey brown look. Pair your smokey eye with a brown eye liner tight lining your eyes, using eyeliner on the waterlines helps add depth without causing your eyes to look smaller.

If you chose to do a blue smokey eye try pairing the look with a navy or deep blue liner for added definition of that color… same for any color you choose. To create a nice smokey blue look think shades such as midnight, navy, denims and steel blues. I nice cadet blue would even work.

You can do a smokey eye look with just about any color you like. For purple try a deep aubergine color story. For pink try deep rosewoods and blackened magentas. For reds merlots, mahoganies, wines, and currents. For orange try ambers, pumpkins, and rusts. The trick here is to use the dark, deep, dirty versions of the shade you are wanting to make smokey and you work from lightest to deepest (with the deepest shade being the one you use along your mobile lid) or from middle to deepest with the lightest shade being the inner 2/3 of the mobile lid when you want a pop of shimmer).
