Hey doll hey. How’s your day/night going? Great I hope.
I’m not able to do a Face of the Day post today. I awoke feeling extremely exhausted and in a world of pain.
I’ve decided to have a bed rest day so that I can curb this Fibro Flare.
A flare is when someone with Fibromyalgia has their symptoms increase in intensity and also has more symptoms all at 1 time. These increase in symptoms and intensity can last anywhere from a few day to even a few months. I once had a flair that lasted well over a year.
Because of the year long flare when I have a new flare I take care to make sure I don’t end up with a long term flare, many times this entails bed rest, extra hydration (I’ll typically increase my water in take by 1/2), I make sure to take every pill in my Fibro regimen, and (because I typically get nauseous during a flare) I adjust my food intake to bland soft foods that wont aggravate my tummy.
So today I attempted to wake up around 7:45 Am but I was too weak to get out of bed so I went back to sleep for an hour. When I got up the at the next alarm I was able to get out of bed, however I felt exhausted and kept nodding off whilst making my coffee so I laid back down and decided to just wait this flare out and I ended up nodding back off, with Fibro flares I tend to sleep extended on and off the whole day …. as is the case today.
So here is the face of a fibro warrior ….
Let’s talk about the extreme exhaustion (called FIbro Fatigue) is not the same as plainly being sleepy… it’s not having enough energy to do something as simple as take a shower or brush your hair.
More times than not the feeling of exhaustion is that of the exhaustion one suffers with worst flu they’ve ever had …. this is how someone with Fibro feels and while it’s important for us spoonies not to over do ourselves.
We often have to cherry pick things to do for the day so as to have enough energy to accomplish everything that is needed and knowing that, more often then not, tasks will have to be left at the way side.
Imagine if you will, getting up in the morning to take a shower and having to choose between giving your hair a much needed shampoo and shaving your legs (which you hadn’t been able to do is a few weeks do to being in extreme pain and exhaustion)…. knowing full well that either activity is going to cause your body to go through a huge energy depletion.
You see … something as simple as raising your hands above your head (say like when you wash your hair) or bending over of any length of time (say like when you shave your legs or sort the laundry) will cause someone with Fibromyalgia exhaustion.
I can’t tell you how many times I have had to lay down in bed for a little while as I recover from just choosing to wash my hair in the midst of my shower. See I never choose to shave my legs while showering because that option always leave me depleted so quickly that I almost always have to call for my hubby to help finish the task of shaving…. I’ve actually adapted and on the days I want to choose to shave rather than wash my hair I actually sit on the bedroom floor with a dish pan full of warm water, my shaving cream, a razor, and a towel and then I shave whilst sitting on the bedroom floor … see this reduces the amount of time I’m spent bending over which means in turn it is less of an energy drain … there still have been times when I needed hubby’s help to finish shaving, but I typically can get through most of the shaving on my own.
So this type of exhaustion is what I am feeling today … an extreme case of the flu with no sore throat or fever but complete with body pain. (bare in mind that Fibro spoonies do get sore throats out of the blue … it’s just one of those things that happen as our immune system systematically attacks our body).
I’m in currently using my Cortana from my computer to dictate this blog post. This helps me save some of my energy and allows me to stay laying down as I recuperate. It’s not full proof, I do have to go in and correct some of the spelling and punctuation and of course I do have to manually enter my pictures. But at least I have away to still be able to blog when I want to.
Aw yes … the dreaded Fibro headaches.
Now I’m a migraine sufferer but the migraines I get as a direct cause of my Fibromyalgia are vastly different.
IT feels like I have a white hot poker in the back of my eyes, and this type of migraine isn’t alleviated with my current migraine medication.
The Fibromyalgia headaches that I get are so bad that I often find myself vomiting uncontrollably.
With no alleviation I just have to wait it out and hope that this migraine passes quickly.
So now let’s talk wide spread pain. The most common symptoms a fibromyalgia is widespread pain of the muscles and nerve endings.
A typical pain day is just a dull pain around the body that never goes away. Pain for fibromyalgia is constant and consistent I never lets up. The only change is the pain level. There are days where the pain level is what we call baseline ( this is the pain intensity that our body typically field on a daily basis). Basically a baseline pain day is the normal amount of pain someone with fibromyalgia feels on average. For instance my baseline pain level is around a 5. This means as long as my pain level is at or below a level 5 I am able to function normally, or as close to normal as someone with fibromyalgia can get. Anything higher then a level 5 pain start to make daily activity and basic human daily life different for me.
Our widespread pain isn’t a basic pain. Fibromyalgia sufferers tend to get clusters of pain in the chest, neck, hip, knees, and elbows. We can also get a group of cluster pain. For example, today my pain is in my hips, my arms, and the muscles of my thighs. On top of that I also have pain associated with my rheumatoid arthritis.
Today my pain level is intense and I can’t get comfortable no matter how I lay or sit.
This is the reason I am unable to play with my makeup today. I feel bummed because makeup play is my own personal time to just dedicate some of my energy level to doing something that makes me happy.
Is a fibromyalgia suffer pain is constant an ever present, we are never without some type of pain we just get better at being able to deal with it.
Please understand that when I say we are able to deal with the pain that we feel on a daily basis it is not the same as someone without a chronic pain disability would feel. For someone with, let’s say, Fibromyalgia our pain levels are different than someone who does not have an autoimmune illness. We feel pain on a higher, more intense level than a non-sick person does.
I can’t tell you how often, When I tell someone I am having a high pain day, I get the response “Oh ya my lower back hurts pretty bad today too”. I can guarantee you that your back pain is nothing as painful as the pain I am in… I feel bad that you have pain, just stop diminishing the pain a spoonie is going through with this careless statement. We are in pain 24/7! We eat, sleep, and breath pain on the daily… It is ever present and never ending.
On a good pain day it feels like we’ve been punched in the arm or leg or back or hip repeatably and it feels like bruises are forming just below the skin’s surface.
On a bad day it feels like we’ve been dropped of the side of a very tall building and have hit every balcony along the way to the ground.
And these are just the muscle and joint pains we experience….
There are typically 7 types of pain a Fibromyalgia sufferer experiences …
The ones I just talked about at classified as hyperalgesia (an abnormally increased sensitivity to pain, which may be caused by damage to nociceptors or peripheral nerves and can cause hypersensitivity to stimulus).
Let’s talk Allodynia (the experience of pain from stimuli that isn’t normally painful). I currently am experiencing this type of pain.
Imagine, if you can, something as simple as the wind from a fan, brushing your hair, a tender kiss on the cheek, or just simply wearing clothing causing you intense pain. That is Allodynia.
I refer to it as razor skin because when I have an Allodynia episode 7 times out of 10 it’s sensory driven pain where my skin feels like I have the worst sun burn in history just bellow the surface of my skin. It hurts to have clothes against my skin, to have even the lightest of bed sheets against my skin, the feel of a pillow at the back of my head, I mean it even hurts to have the fan gently blowing over my skin.
Have you ever said something like “My hair hurts”? For someone experiencing Allodynia their hair actually does hurt. It’s tender to brush the hair, to try and put it up in a bun, to just simple have someone run their hands over the hair.
Another form of pain is closely familiar to Allodynia and that is Paresthesia (numbness or a burning feeling that occurs most often in the extremities, such as the hands, arms, legs, or feet, but that can happen elsewhere in the body as well).
This is the type of pain that often makes you super sensitive to climate changes … so for some examples … on a hot day I might feel cold instead but that feeling causes pain to the skin exposed to the temperature…. whilst showering the cold water might feel extremely hot and feel like it’s burning my skin…. I can’t tell you how often I have burned my hand on the stove because I just don’t feel it.
It is also the type of pain that leaves my arms and legs feeling like white hot pins and needles sticking out of my skin.
Then you have your garden variety muscle, joint, and abdominal pains associated with Fibromyalgia… and the aforementioned migraines.
Bare in mind that no 2 walks with Fibromyalgia are the same as are no 2 treatments.
There are also countless symptoms associated with Fibromyalgia (too many to list in 1 blog post).
The only thing that we all share in common is that we have a illness (a disorder if you will) that effects over 5 million adults in the US alone (not to mention our Juvenal counterparts and our sufferers outside the US) that has no cure and all we can do is manage the symptoms 1 at a time with medication, with self care, with a sort of hyper-vigilance that allows us to pay attention to what our bodies need.
Well that’s all for now dolls. Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoy the rest of your day/night and that you are in good spirits and health.
I hope to be back to playing in my makeup tomorrow… no promises though as I don’t know if I will be feeling better by then.
Remember spoonies … save a spoon for a bit of lipstick …. (this is a metaphorical lipstick of course … This lipstick represents 1 thing … 1 item… 1 something that you save some energy to do that makes you happy and puts you first and just helps you maintain some self care for YOURSELF first … today my lipstick is laying here writing this blog … even though typically my metaphorical lipstick is an actual lipstick because makeup makes me happy).
Hey doll hey!! How’s your day/night going? Great I hope. I chose not to do my makeup today because I woke up with intense pain and I had to make a market run today so I just new I would be completely out of sorts if I tried to take the time to do my makeup on top of running to the produce store, the Spanish supermarket, and the discount store to get cleaning supplies … Plus it’s the time of the month when I make our homemade Latin condiment called Sofrito (more on that in the next blog).
So I just wanted to pop in and apologize for not getting a Face of the Day done… I just need the day to rest after shopping and meal prep.
But I wanted to show you the face spa masks I did this week and let you know what I think about them.
Revolution Skincare x Jake-Jamie Avocado Face Mask $11 for 1.06 ounces of product at Ulta.
How to use : Apply 1-2 times a week. Allow to work for 10 – 15 minutes. Massage into skin for 30 seconds then rinse well.
I would give this face mask a grade of A++. It smells just like a fresh avocado! There are chunks in it that seem like they might be actual avocado but they felt hard (not like a ripe avocado that the pieces would be creamy and squishy). There is also micro granules of oat for exfoliating. This mask felt cooling and soothing. It left my face feeling so soft and hydrated. I thoroughly enjoyed spa day with this mask.
Revolution Skincare Hyaluronic Acid Face Mask $11 for 1.06 ounces at Ulta.
This one is meant to be a night mask, however I love my sin care routine too much to skip my night skin care in place of an overnight mask so I just use this one as a 30 minute mask treatment.
How to use: Apply to cleansed skin to soak in overnight, avoiding the eye area. Cleanse any residue or massage in upon waking. Use 1-2 times a week.
This is a super thick mask that just melts nicely into your skin. It tingles a little when you first put it on but that sensation goes away after a few minutes. It’s another mask that’s very cooling.
I left it on for 30 minutes and than washed it away with warm water. It took a bit of fussing to get the mask off since it’s such a thick mask, but when I did my face felt so soft and so hydrated. It made my face so smooth and supple.
I plan to do these 2 masks twice a month, along with my homemade honey and rice powder mask that I already do twice a month.
Now … on to a quick mention about a dish I learned how to do yesterday….
I learned how to make Cuban Ropa Vieja!!
My husband made a mistake a few days ago when I sent him to the food market to get steaks… He came back with flank steaks (which is used to make ropa vieja but I’ve never worked with flank steak so I sent him back to the store to get regular steaks for dinner for that night’s meal and I set out to research how to make this delicious Cuban dish.
The recipe called for 2 pounds flank steak, 1 large red and 1 large green bell pepper, 1 large Spanish onion, Cumin, Bay Leaf, Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder, 1 can of tomato sauce, olive oil and oregano. I used 2 tablespoons of the Cumin, 3 bay leaves, a tablespoon of salt 1/2 a tablespoon of pepper, 3 tablespoons of garlic powder (and I threw in 2 tablespoons of fresh garlic), and 1 tablespoon of oregano. I used about the equivalent of 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
In a preheated skillet I put the olive oil, peppers, and onion. I let that hang out on medium high heat for about 5 minutes and popped in all the condiments and the fresh garlic and cooked for an additional 5 minutes.
I then added the flank steak and the tomato sauce and simmered the whole think for 45 minutes (the Cuban recipe says to simmer for 2 hours, but I just didn’t have the time to wait so I cooked it for 45 minutes). I then turned it over and let it simmer for an additional 15 minutes. I then shredded the steak (this is when I realized why you should let it simmer for 2 hours…. it was very tough to shred. I ended up having to pop the steak into a Nutribullet, this made the steak a lot finer than if I had shredded it by hand , but it still came out very tasty.
Well that’s all for now dolls…. Stay tuned for my next post when I teach you how to make homemade Sofrito (a classic Latin staple).
Hey doll hey!! How’s your day/night going? Great I hope. Today I am having a really bad Fibromyalgia day. I am in a world of pain. I can’t stand and I can’t walk. I hurt so bad that it keeps making me vomit. I think I’m headed for another Fibro flair. That’s when your body becomes riddled with Fibro symptoms and lasts a few days to weeks … One time I had a flair last a year. So I may not be doing a Face of the Day tomorrow just to give myself some rest while I heal.
Today I am wearing Burberry Brit perfume. Let’s jump into this Face of the Day …
Base: I primed my face using Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer ($54 at Sephora) and just a tad bit of Tarte Clean Slate Timeless Smoothing Primer ($39 at Ulta) around the pores of my cheek area. I used the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter ($44 on the Beautylish website) in the shade #3 Light/Medium to give my skin that lit from within glow. For foundation today I am using Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation ($44 on the Beautylish website) in the shade 3 Neutral. I took the Hollywood Flawless Filter up under my under eyes so I chose not to use a color corrector today instead I just used 3 little dots of Flower Beauty Light Illusion Full Coverage Concealer ($9.99 at Ulta) in the shade L3-4 Light. I contoured using Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Contour Wand ( $38 on the Beautylish website) in the shade 2 Medium/Dark… I used it around the perimeter of my forehead, hollows of the cheeks, and the bridge of my nose. I then highlighted the bridge of my nose, cupid’s bow, tops of the cheeks, center of the chin, and high points above my brows using first the Charlotte Tilbury Glowgasm Beauty Light Wand ($38 at Sephora) in the shade Goldgasm and then went in on the high points with the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Beauty Light Wand ($39 on the Beautylish website). I then set the rest of my face using Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Skin Perfecting Micro-Powder ($45 at Sephora) in the shade 2 Medium (this is also the powder I’ll use for touch ups today). After setting my face I really didn’t think I needed to bronze but I wanted to add just a bit more color to the skin so I lightly warmed up my face using Benefit Boxed Bronzer ($30 at Ulta and Sephora) in the shade Hoola.
Eyes: I primed my lids using P.Louise Base ($10 pound sterling/ $12.08 USD on their website… can also be found on the Morphie website for $15) in the shade Rumour 0.5. For today’s eye look I used the NYX Ultimate Shadow Palette ($12.60 at Ulta) in the colorway Warm Neutrals. I started with the 2nd shade of the 2nd row (a pastel peach nude matte) from the lash line to the brow bone. I then used the 2nd shade of the 4th row (a mid-toned terracotta matte) on the outer 1/3 of the mobile lid and the outer v of the crease. I then decided I wanted less orange and more brown to the look so i layered the 1st shade of the 4th row (a deep chocolate with a rose gold shift shimmer) over top of the terracotta shade. I then used the 3rd shade of the 2nd row (peachy pink with silver flip metallic) on the remaining 2/3 of the mobile lid and then took the 1st shade of the 3rd row (a vintage gold metallic) and patted that over the middle 1/3 to blend the inner and outer 1/3 together. For the bottom lash line I used more of the terracotta shade and created a drop shadow with it. I then took more of the chocolate brown shade and smudged that along my lash line. I highlighted the inner corners using a combo of the 2nd shade of the 1st row (white with a yellow shift metallic) and the 4th shade of the 1st row (champagne metallic). I lined my lower and upper waterlines using Inglot Gel Liner ($15.20 on their wbesite) in the shade #90 Brown. I set my brows using Believe Beauty Eyebrow Styling Gel ($4 at Dollar General) in clear and then filled in my brows using Joah Brow Down To Me Precision Brow Pencil (originally $9.50 but on sale for $6.65 on their website) in the shade Black Brown. I carved out my brow line using the BH Studio Pro Brow Highlighter ($5 on their website) on the shimmer side and set the brow line using the 1st shade of the 1st row (a creamy ivory matte). I coated my upper and lower lashes with 2 coats of Milani Dangerous Lengths Mascara ($9.99 at Ulta).
Cheeks and Lips: Since I did the cream highlighter and was really loving the effect of it I chose not to use powder highlighter today. For blush today I chose Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-HR Blush ($29 at Sephora) in the shade Seduce (rosey nude matte). I lined and then filled in my lips using NYX Suede Matte Lip Liner ($4 at Ulta) in the shade Wipped Caviar (a reddish pink nude). I topped the lips off using ColourPop Creme Lux Lipstick (discontinued was limited edition) in the shade Uno Mas (medium dusty coral).
Final Thoughts: I don’t know if I will be able to play with my makeup tomorrow. I might just do a quick no makeup/makeup look and that’s if I am not in as much pain as I am today.
I checked my beauty orders … I have several in the mail as we speak and should have them all by weeks end. I will do a haul post and of course follow up with a full review on the products I purchased.
Well that’s all for now dolls. I hope you have a great rest of your day/night. Remember, Save a spoon for a bit of lipstick.
Hey doll hey!!! How’s your day/night going?? Great I hope.
I have a lot of people ask me why I always say “Save a spoon for a bit of lipstick”. The reason I say this is that as a spoonie over the years I hadn’t always left spoons for self care. I would spend all my spoons, or energy for those of you who don’t know what that means. We who suffer from autoimmune illnesses call ourselves spoonies…. why you ask? Because we identify with an article by a fellow spoonie named Christine Miserandino who wrote an article entitled Spoon Theory where she explained to her friend who wanted to know what it was like to deal with an autoimmune illness. She used spoons in her explanation to symbolize the amount of energy someone with autoimmune illnesses has when they start their day and how each little thing we do takes away from this spoon supply.
Well for many years I would waste all my spoons before I got to doing anything for myself and this caused me to suffer horrible depression and caused me to have very low self esteem. After a few years of always feeling horrible about myself I realized the things I loved doing such as home spa days, painting my nails, playing in my makeup, getting dressed in actual clothes (I would take a shower and than immediately pop myself into a fresh pair of pajamas), and simply just wearing some perfume (I thought why bother I’m stuck in the house because of this stupid illness and why waste perfume on myself when I’m only staring at the same 4 damn walls). I finally remembered that I have value and I have the right to pamper myself even if I’m only going to be resting or just being around the house. So I started to limit myself to the things I do in a day. Instead of getting up and cleaning the full house everyday (yes I use to dust and mop and vacuum and the wash, and rearrange the whole house everyday on top of all of my normal responsibilities such as cooking and dishes). I started taking some of the energy and poured it into self care… I would take my shower and then do something for myself such as my hair (instead of just pushing a brush through my hair and pulling it into a bun) or giving myself a pedicure or spending time doing a face mask…. slowly this morphed into me wanting to do more beauty related things for my blog …. this led to me doing my makeup every day which in turn helped with my depression …. when you look put together, you just feel better. This led me to want to dress up more, instead of just living in pjs or a pair of my husband’s sweatpants.
I conclude every post with the tag line “Remember… Save a spoon for a little lipstick” as a way to remind my fellow spoonies to save time and energy for themselves.
This is so important for all spoonies to do. We tend to put the needs of everyone else before ourselves… we then get lost in all the daily coming and goings and before you know it we are a bit sadder, a bit more frustrated, a bit more hopeless….. this effects our self esteem and our mental health.
Now I’m not saying applying lipstick will instantly get rid of our depression and boost our self esteem… but it starts to help… just taking a few minutes and a spoon or two out of our days to get do something as simple as giving ourselves a face mask treatment or giving ourselves a new hair style or just simply popping on some makeup starts to make us feel happier and more put together…. this can lead to not wanting to wear pjs or sweats all day …. it starts to boost your self confidence and in turn improves your mood.
Now, this wont be a “first time you try it you’ll be all better” type approach to better mental health…. this is a “taking time out for me, because I’m worth it” type approach.
See when I first got sick …. I was down all the time. I felt useless and as if I was a burden. I couldn’t even shower on my own … my husband had to help me shower because I was so weak and in so much pain that just getting into the tub was a huge feat. By the time I was done soaping my body up and had no energy left to wash my hair.
On day hubby came home with a shower chair and said we were going to do this together…. he would hop in the shower with me…. help me lather up and whilst I was sitting on the shower chair he would take the responsibility to wash my hair. I still only wore buns for most of the time… except for on moderately good days where I could do my hair and makeup…. even though it took a long time to do the makeup portion of my day…. with tons of starts and stops.
I would get so frustrated because I would cook dinner and not have enough energy to do the dishes.. or get to the wash… or even make my bed (on the good days where I was able to get out of bed).
I started to get depressed because I hadn’t the spoons to visit friends or go to a movie, or even go out for dinner. We had Disney season passes … and I had no energy to even attempt to go to the happiest place on earth. I started to beat myself up because I no longer could tackle all of the house work in 1 go.
I never liked going out because I hadn’t the energy to put myself together … I hated leaving the house in pjs or sweats and hated that I always wore my hair in a bun with no makeup…. makeup was always a big part of my soul …. I am seriously passionate about makeup …. it’s my favorite hobby.
As time went on I started to adjust to the medications and treatments for Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis and was able to do more… but I still wasn’t able to get to do things for myself …. this is when I realized I had to figuratively die to my old life and begin to accept and improve my new life as a spoonie.
This is when I took time to see just how much I could do before my spoons were gone and learned to adjust life so that there was enough spoons for both myself and my household.
I learned it’s ok to do the wash and not fold it or put it away until the next day (although there are some times that when I do the wash I end up in a flair and have to put off putting the clothes away for a few day …. and I have learned over the years that this is OK… it’s OK to need to rest …. allow yourself to rest …. you deserve to rest). I learned that I could ask for help with the cooking and washing up afterward. I also learned to take short cuts … such as purchasing paper plates and cups and disposable utensils to make washing up quicker and easier for me. I learned to accept that it’s OK to serve left overs the next day if I am having a spoon shortage. I learned that it’s OK to dust biweekly instead of everyday … I learned it’s OK to wash my hair every 2 to 3 days instead of everyday …. in fact my hair has never been better …. apparently forgoing washing my hair for a few days (even though I still brush it and put it together nicely) actually leaves my hair softer and easier to manage.
I still longed for my old life but set out to find life hacks to help me get back to as close to my old life as I could.
One of those things was implementing more self care things into my daily routine.
I started to do the wash weekly instead of daily…. vacuuming weekly instead of daily …. I learned that I could make my bed daily without having to furnish the bed with all the extra decorative pillows and duvets , that just simply fixing up the bed with the bed sheets and cover where OK. I learned that not every meal has to be a 4 course extravaganza … that just a simple steak and mash potatoes was good enough. That dessert didn’t have to be homemade every night….. dessert could be a weekend adventure and that I didn’t need to make it from scratch if I didn’t have the extra spoons for it. I learned that if I needed to soak the pots and pans (since we now were using paper plates and cups and disposable utensils) for the night …. this was OK ….
I simply learned to let go of my super structured life and just relax into the new life of needing to watch my spoon count for the day ….
Before I knew it I had extra spoons that I could use for my own self worth. I was able to take time to do hair styles for myself … take time to sit down and play in my makeup and feel good about that ….. before I knew it I was waiting to wear outfits instead of PJs (even thought there are still days where I just don’t have the spoon count to get dressed up … and that still is OK …. I allow myself the bummy days when I need them). I was wanting to take the time to sit down a blog more … I found myself feeling confident again, happy again, more put together again.
This is the reason I tag line each post with “Remember save a spoon for a bit of lipstick”. It’s to remind my fellow spoonies to save some energy for something for themselves …. To save a spoon to do something for their own well being … not just whatever one else needs. To take the time to practice self care …. even if it’s just a simple pedicure or manicure …. it’s 1 thing out of all the things you do that is simply just for you …. you DESERVE to do something for yourself too. I chose to do my makeup for myself because it makes me happy and I love playing around with looks …. that’s the thing I choose to save my special spoon for …. so even if you don’t like makeup save a special spoon for YOURSELF….. or are just starting out with makeup use that special spoon to practice and hone your makeup skills ….. it could be anything …. you could use that spoon to crochet or knit …. to do a puzzle or read a book …. you could use it to shave your legs or color your hair …. use that special spoon to go for coffee with a friend or go see a movie, or pop into the mall for a bit of retail therapy….the possibilities are endless … the important take away is that you save a special spoon for an activity that is just for you …. So when I use my tag line …. I am in no way trying to down play that we have limited energy as an autoimmune person … I’m simply reminding you to save some of that energy to treat yourself well.
Well…. that’s all for this post dolls…. I hope an pray you are having a good day/night …. that you are low in pain and are in good spirits….
Remember dolls …. Save a spoon for a bit of lipstick.
Hello dolls! I hope you are having a wonderful Christmas Eve…. It’s cold and rainy here in Florida and my Fibromyalgia is being effected by it.
Today was my Olaplex hair care day so I had to lay down for a little after doing my hair. I was seriously thinking of skipping my makeup today but it’s really the thing that makes me feel happy, I love the process of putting on my makeup…. So I decided I would just take my time and do the best I could.I had planed to do a gold green and red eye look today but it would have taken a lot more energy than I could spare today… so I changed the outfit I will be wearing to our Christmas Memorial Party to just a pair of jeans and this super cute Green top…. so I thought OK …. just green today….. so let’s jump into the face of the day…..
BASE: I used 2 primers today …. Makeup Forever Step 1 Skin Equalizer ($17 at Sephora) to blur my pores, and BECCA Backlight Priming Filter ($39 at Ulta and Sephora) to give me a bit more glow (I forgot to do my nightly moisturizing routine last night so I needed a little more dew to my look). I color corrected (yup another sleepless night) with my Tarte CC Undereye Corrector ($25 at Ulta and Sephora) in the color Light-Medium, and concealed my under eyes with ELF HD Lifting Concealer ($4 on their website) in the color Light. For foundation today I chose NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation ($49 at Sephora) in the color Light 5 Fiji. I set my full face with Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Skin Protecting Micro-Powder ($45 on Beautylish’s website) in the color 2 Medium. I bronzed my face with NYX Matte Bronzer ($10 at Ulta) in the color Deep Tan.
EYES: I primed my eyes with Tarte Shape Tape ($25 at Ulta) in the color Light-Medium Honey. The only palette I used today was the BH Ultimate Matte 42 Color Shadow Palette ($28 on their website). I set the Shape Tape with the 1st shade on the 3rd row (a cream matte). For my 1st transition shade was the 4th color on the 3rd row (a yellow toned orange matte) followed by the 4th shade on the 4th row (a peach toned tan matte). For my Crease shade I used the 3rd shade of the 4th row (a mid-toned brown matte)…. I used a bit more of this color on the first 1/3 and last 1/3 of my lid to contour it a bit. For my lids I combined 3 colors (2 from the palette and 1 from Urban Decay)…. On the back of my hand I mixed Urban Decay single shadow ($20 at Ulta) in the color Loaded (a blacked emerald with true green reflect shimmer) with the 5th shade of the last row (a blue toned green matte) and the 4th shade of the last row (a deep forest green matte). I then deepened the outer v with the 6th shade of the 5th row (a deep true brown matte). On my lower lash line I used 4th shade of the 4th row (a peach toned tan matte) as my drop shadow and then I deepened the lower lash line with the 6th shade of the 5th row (a deep true brown matte). I lined my water line with NYX Faux Whites Eye Liner ($8 at Ulta) in the color Linen. I highlighted my inner corners with Urban Decay single shadow ($20 at Ulta) in Midnight Cowboy (a pale pink with silver glitter). For my brows I used ELF Ultra precise Brow Pencil ($5 on their website) and Wow Brow ($4 on their website) in the color Dark Brown. I highlighted my brows with the BH Studio Pro Brow Highlighter ($5 on their website) on the matte side…. and set the highlighter with the 1st shade of the 1st row (a vanilla white). I primed my lashes with Loreal Voluminous Primer ($5.99 at Target) and chose Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes ($29 on the Beautylish website) in the color Glossy Black.
CHEEKS and Lips: I chose a soft color today for my blush… Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush ($29 at Ulta) in the color Captivating (a pale true coral matte). I highlighted the tops of my cheek bones, temples, brow bones, and Cupid’s Bow with Milani After Glow ($10 at Ulta) in the color 01 Strobelight (a peachy champagne). I lined my lips with Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat ($22 on the Beautylish website) in the color Pillow Talk (a pink nude) and filled my lips in with Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G ($34 on the Beautylish Website) in the color Bitch Perfect (a peachy nude cream).
Final Thoughts ….
BECCA Backlight Priming Filter: A+++ Out of all of the glow primers out there this is hands down my favorite primer! It leaves the skin looking radiant with out looking like a disco ball or looking greasy. I have been known to use this primer on days where I am not wearing any other makeup besides mascara and lip gloss…. I can’t tell you just how amazing this product this is … It gives any foundation a lit from within glow to it.
ELF HD Lifting Concealer: A I keep forgetting I have this concealer …. I find I really like the look it gives my under eyes. It only comes in 3 shades and none of those shades are deep enough for our deep skinned beauties. I’m running out of this concealer so I will have to place an order soon …. This one remineds me of the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, except the ELF one sets perfectly with just a tinny bit of powder.
NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation: A Comes in 20 shades with 9 shades for deeper skin. It’s a full coverage dewy foundation. It remains tacky so you will need to set it with powder …. in fact it’s so tacky I always have to set my face 2 times. I like this foundation a lot and will probably repurchase it once I am out of it.
Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes: B+ This is a nice mascara, but it’s too natural looking … it doesn’t lengthen or thicken the lashes at all… I like it for natural days…. for glam days it needs a primer. I don’t know if I will repurchase this one or not just yet.
Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush: A+++ I have said this before but this is my favorite formula for blush … It’s creamy, finely milled, and never chalky or patchy. There isn’t any crazy pigmentation here … it’s just right …. and the colors are so amazing… I own several and will be purchasing other colors soon.
Milani After Glow: B++ These highlighter are super powerful but they have glitter in them and emphasize every imperfection… I like this highlighter a lot for my cupid’s bow and my brow bones, but on my temples and cheek bones it’s just too much and i always forget to use a light hand. I may repurchase this one once I hit pan …. I’ll have to wait and see if there are any new releases with less glitter.
Well that’s all for now dolls… I hope you have an amazing Christmas and that you are found with plenty of spoons and as close to pain free as possible.
As always remember to save a spoon for a bit of makeup ….
Morning dolls. How are you doing today? I woke early in pain today… It’s pouring outside and my pain level is through the roof. I started to think, I’m just going to take it easy today. Maybe I wont do my makeup today and I’ll just do a hair mask and a face mask today…. Then I thought but doing my makeup always makes my spirits happy… so I jumped in the shower and sat down and did my makeup….
I’m low on spoons today so I couldn’t wash my hair …. I’ll do it tonight before bed …. so I used my trusty Batiste Dry Shampoo ($8.99 at Ulta) and a mess of hair spray to do my hair today.
As a Fibromyalgia sufferer we only have a limited amount of energy, and that energy decreases so much when we are having a high pain day…. we often have to cut corners or just skip something in order to just get by for that day…. Today is one of those days.
Well on to the face of the day ….
BASE: I’m trying to use up my It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Primer ($38 on their website) so that’s what I used today. I woke up with so much darkness under my eyes that I really had to pack on the Tarte CC Undereye Corrector ($25 at Ulta) in Light-Medium. I was a little dry around my eyes today so I stuck with my NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer ($30 at Ulta) in the color Medium 1 Custard. Because I am low on spoons today I chose a foundation that I know always works up easy… Hourglass Seamless Finish Foundation Stick ($46 at Sephora) in the color Buff. I set my whole face with the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Skin Perfecting Micro-Powder ($45 on the Beautylish website) in the color 2 Medium. I again chose a bronzer that needed little effort to work in to the skin … I chose Chanel Soleil Tan De Chanel ($50 on the Chanel website) in Universal Bronze.
EYES: I started to skip out on doing my eye shadow but I was looking very pale today so just chose to do a simple low key look today. I primed, as always, with my Tarte Shape Tape ($25 at Ulta) in the color Light Medium Honey. I picked my BH Cosmetics Ultimate Matte 42 Color Shadow Palette ($28 on their website) as my palette today since the shadows work up so fast and easy. I set my Shape Tape with the first color of the 3rd row (a medium pale cream matte). As my 1st transition shade I chose the 2nd color of the 3rd row (a pale coral peach matte). I chose the 4th shadow of the 1st row (a deep orange coral matte) as my second transition shade. I deepened my crease, outer v, and outer 1/3 of my lid with the 3rd shadow of the 4th row ( a medium true brown matte). I added a bit of definition to my outer v by mixing the 6th shadow of the 5th row (a dusty true mid toned brown matte) with the last color of the last row (a dusty true black matte). I skipped liner today and I skipped doing a drop shadow on the lower lash line, instead I just added a bit of definition on the lower lash line with the 3rd shadow of the 4th row (a medium true brown matte). On the inner 2/3 of my lid I used Hikari Cream Pigment ($15 on the Hikari website) in the color Honey Dew and for my inner corner highlight I used Urban Decay Single Shadow ($20 at Ulta) in the color Midnight Cowboy. I did my brows the same way I’ve been doing them this week …. I used Professional Brow Powder ($10 at Oh La La Brow Bar) in the color Dark Brow and ELF Wow Brow ($4 on their website) in the color Dark Brown. I highlighted my brow bone with the BH Cosmetics Studio Pro Brow Highlighter ($5 on their website) on the matte side and set it with the 1st shade of the 1st row of the BH Cosmetics Palette (a vanilla white matte). I had left my favorite mascara in the other room so I just picked out the one I forgot I purchased when I did my full face of NYX products…. NYX On The Rise Volume Liftscara ($7.70 at Ulta) in the color black.
CHEEKS and LIPS: I already had my BH Cosmetics Classic Blush 10 Color Blush Palette ($12 on their website) at my makeup desk so I chose the 3rd color on the 2nd row (a soft pinky coral matte). I chose the NYX Born to Glow Highlighting Palette ($25 at Ulta) and chose the 2nd color on the 2nd row (a pale gold shimmer highlighter). I highlighted the tops of my cheeks, temples, brow bone, and cupid’s bow. I picked Loreal 6 Hr Infallible Never Fail Lip Liner (6.99 at Walmart) in the color Coral (a true toned coral) and I filled my full lips with this liner. Then I chose NYX Butter Gloss ($5 at Ulta) in the color Creme Brulee (a milky pink coral gloss).
Hourglass Seamless Finish Foundation Stick: A+++ This foundation comes in shades with 9 dedicated to deeper skin tones. You get .25 ounces of product, but a little goes a long way with this one …. like 1 swipe for each cheek and the forehead …. and that gives enough extra for the rest of the face and neck. It’s billed as a full coverage that is water proof and long wearing. This is 100% my favorite foundation! I forgot I had it in my collection. It fell off my foundation shelf when I was looking for a low maintenance BB cream and I remembered how simple it was to use this one. It’s a demi matte foundation with great coverage ( I would say it’s more a medium full coverage) The color is spot on my tone. This foundation doesn’t set down , you do need to use a powder to set it , but it leaves the skin looking so succulent, so healthy looking that I don’t mind needing a bit of powder. I remember this was the foundation I chose every time I traveled anywhere. It was the foundation I used on very important days too.
Chanel Soleil Tan De Chanel: A+++!!! I gush over this bronzer every time I use it I know… but I can’t help it! This bronzer is that good!! It’s the perfect tone. It’s a cream to powder formula (normally I hate cream products but this one melts into the skin so flawlessly that it’s a joy to use.). This bronzer warms up the face so wonderfully… it’s the only bronzer I’ve ever used that looks like a tan, not like makeup. If you want to spurge on something special for yourself , consider making this your high ticket product., you wont regret it.
BH Cosmetics Ultimate Matte 42 Color Shadow Palette: A++ I love that there is a palette out there that can handle any look you want to do. This palette has all the best of the neutral world and has great pops of color. For a drug store palette these highly pigmented mattes are creamy, finely milled, and blend like a dream. Unlike other palettes, this palette’s mattes can be layered on top of each other without loosing the color payoff of each color… in other words … they don’t muddle together.
Hikari Cream Pigment: A++ I don’t own many cream products, I hate the way they look on me, but this cream pigment is amazing!!! It’s very creamy but applies like a powder. It’s the perfect shade for a lid or inner corner highlight. There are 21 shades to chose from … ranging from dewy to smokey …. and the price tag isn’t bad for the quality you get with this pigment.
Urban Decay Single Shadow * specifically Midnight Cowboy *: A- If you have been reading my blog for any period of time you know by now I HATE GLITTER. But Midnight Cowboy is such a beautiful color that I just deal with the glitter in it. Urban Decay single shadows come in 63 colors, of which I own two, Midnight Cowboy and Loaded ( a deep emerald I use around Christmas time … some matte, satin, and shimmer (with glitter). A little of this shade goes a long way and it really brightens up any look.
NYX On The Rise Volume Liftscara: D I really hated working with this mascara. It left my eyelashes crunchy and lifeless. I also hate the applicator brush… it’s one of those plastic bristle brushes, I can’t stand the way it applied… I’ll try to use it up but I more than likely will be throwing this one away.
NYX Born to Glow Highlighting Palette: B- I love the color of these highlighters but once again …. GLITTER!!!! It’s finely milled, not chunky like other highlighters, but again I just don’t like glitter… and this highlighter picks up every imperfection of the cheeks. It’s still pretty in color tone so I’ll use it up but I wont repurchase.
Loreal 6Hr Infallible Never Fail Lip Liner: A+ This color comes in 8 shades… of which I own 1… Coral. This liner is the perfect consistency… It’s not too waxy not too creamy …. it’s a perfect mix of both. I normally use it to fill in my lips or contour my lips and then I use a gloss over top … It lasts a long time too. I am thinking of picking up a couple of back ups of this shade …. I don’t really like any of the other shades.
NYX Butter Gloss: A+++ This gloss comes in 32 shades. I own 5. I use to own them all but when I de-cluttered my stash when we were moving I passed them on to my niece. I am going to pick up more shades shortly… It’s the perfect formula… not at all sticky, not at all greasy feeling… it doesn’t travel outside the lip line…. the pigmentation is a medium pigmentation so you still see a little skin underneath so if you want more of a color payoff you will need to cancel out your lips by using a foundation, concealer, or face powder. This is a great little lip gloss.
Well that’s all for now babies … Tomorrow’s and Wednesday’s Face of the Day may be posted on Thursday …. Not sure if I will have the time to post before the Holiday Memorial tomorrow, and I may be out of spoons on Thursday …. but I will try and post them as soon as possible….
Hi dolls. So it’s the day after my Radiofrequency Ablation procedure and I am st ill hurting pretty badly.
The day of the procedure was pretty intense. It started with anesthesia team. They had a hard time putting a line in. My veins kept collapsing. It took 7 tries to finally get a line put in and that line was in my wrist…. boy did that hurt. Today my veins are all bruised and sore and the site on my wrist is very tender.
Next instead of putting my under right away they gave me local anesthesia , this way I could still be awake when the probes were in place to make sure they were in the right position. When the probes hit the nerve that is to be burned it stings a little… it was very uncomfortable. They then injected me with a numbing agent which burns when it goes in.
Then I am put under anesthesia and don’t remember anything until I was back in my room with the nurse standing over me asking if I’d like some apple juice. I didn’t feel any pain just then because the numbing agent was still working.
The car ride home was a bit uncomfortable. Every pothole killed me. Then it was off to bed. For some reason after anesthesia I sleep for a few hours when I get home.
When I woke up I could feel the pain… and boy was there pain…. I had to lay on my side to keep from aggravating my procedure site. The pressure I felt was intense, even laying on the other hip I felt the pressure.
I tried a ice pack but that just made the pain worse so I just chose to ride out the healing process.
I babied myself the whole day, resting and binge watching the DC Universe’s Titans. I fell asleep for the night around 11 (it was hard to get to sleep because of the pain).
Flash forward to this morning. I woke up hurting because somehow in the middle of the night I had flipped over onto the side I get the procedure in. I needed my husband’s help to get out of bed today and to shower because I can’t bend over just now.
I decided to do my makeup anyway, and that took forever because I had to stop and rest for a little because the pressure on my hip area was bad.
Today I will baby my hip to give it just 1 more day to heal, normally I am not hurting this bad the day after Radiofrequency Ablation …. it has to be that I was sleeping on the site, but it is what it is and I’ll just have to round with the punches.
Today I can take some Tylenol for the pain, which I have already done and I will rest the rest of the day.
By tomorrow I will be feeling much better and by Sunday I will be able to bend all the way over and touch my toes.
Yes, there is a ton of pain that comes with Radiofrequency Ablation , but the outcome (after the healing) is so worth the little bit of time I spend in pain. I’m able to have mobility and I’m able to sit up for the most part.
The days before having Radiofrequency Ablation I couldn’t sit up right for more than an hour at a time without hurting so much.
Radiofrequency Ablation definitely gives me a better quality life.
Well that’s all for now dolls, hope your day is good.
Good morning dolls. We made it to the weekend!! I hope the day finds you with plenty of spoons. I woke up stiff and my Rheumatoid Arthritis is acting up, which is common for cold weather days. I had an abundance of spoons today so I tackled a bronzey smokey eye.
I used the ColourPop Brown Sugar eye shadow palette again today. I have really been enjoying the ColourPop shadows. They go on so buttery and blend like a dream.
Well let’s get started.
Base: For primer I used the Tarte Poreless Mattifying Primer ($32 at Ulta, Sephora, and Tarte’s website) again; I’m trying to use it up since I don’t like the smell, and will not be repurchasing it. Today’s foundation is NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation ($49 at Sephora and NARS’s website) in the color Fiji. For the 3rd day in a row I have woken up with dark circles do to not being able to sleep because of pain, so I used my Tarte CC undereye corrector ($25 at Ulta Sephora and Tarte’s website) in the color light medium. I used Kat Von D Lock It Tattoo Concealer (was $25 is now discontinued) in the color medium 22. To bronze my skin I used The Chanel Soleil Tan De Chanel ($50 on the Chanel website) in the color Bronze Universal. I set my whole face, including undereyes, with the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder ($39 at Sephora and on the Laura Mercier website) in the color Translucent.
Eyes: I primed my eyes with the Tarte Shape Tape ($19 at Ulta) in the color Light Medium Honey. I chose the ColourPop Brown Sugar Eye Shadow Palette ($15 on the ColourPop website ) and set my lids with the color Chai. As my transition color I chose Jamocha. My crease color is Choc, I also used Choc on the outer 1/3 of my lid. For the outer v I picks a combination of Sorrel and Henna. To line my lower lash line I used a combination of Henna and Choc and then used what was left of Jamocha on my brush to defuse the hard line of eye shadow. On my lids I used Auburn, which I applied with my finger for for maximum payoff. For the inner corner highlight I used Ginger. I then switched to the Going Coconuts palette from ColourPop ($12 on the ColourPop website) and used Shredded for my brow bone highlight. My brows I used the combination of the Ultra Precise Brow Pencil ($5 on the ELF website) and Wow Brow ($4 on the ELF website) from ELF. My liner today is the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner ($20 at Sephora) in Mad Max Brown. For my lashes I used the Loreal Voluminous Base ($5.99 at Target) and paired it with the Balm Whats Your Type? mascara ($19 on The Blam website). On my water line I used The Balm Mr. Write eyeliner ($13 on Balm’s website) in the color Seymour Datenights.
Cheeks and Lips: Today I chose a subtle highlight. I used MAC Mineralize SkinFinish ($36 at MAC and Ulta) in the color Warm Rose. For blush I used NARS blush ($30 at Sephora) in Orgasm. My Lip combo today is Kat Von D Everlasting Lip Pencil ($19 at Sephora) in the color Bow N Arrow and MAC Matte Lipstick ($18.50 at MAC and Sephora) in Velvet Teddy. I added the tiniest amount of the eye shadow Auburn to the center of my lips.
The NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation comes in 20 shades (6 shades for deeper skin) and is billed as a full coverage foundation. At best it is a high medium coverage foundation.
Tarte CC undereye corrector is my favorite under eye treatment. It gets the under eye bright and dewy. I hope it’s never discontinued.
Kat Von D Lock It Tattoo Concealer was discontinued and that makes me a sad panda. This concealer is so good!!! It’s thick enough to cover tattoos but thin enough for the under eye.
Chanel Soleil Tan De Chanel is my favorite bronzer in my collection. It’s a cream to powder formula that melts into the skin effortlessly. It makes the skin look tan, not look like a fake tan. I even use it on days where I am not wearing makeup. It’s so worth the $50 price tag. You get a ton of product even though it looks like there isn’t a lot of product you actually get 30 grams of bronzer.
The is a reason that the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder is the only setting powder I gravitate to. It’s velvety smooth and,,as long as you use small amounts and build as you go, it never looks cakey.
Tarte Shape Tape is a thick concealer…. I didn’t like it under my eyes but I love it as a primer for my lids. I do you this concealer on my hormonal break outs (its a good spot treatment) but I never use it to correct the skin.
I can’t say enough about the ColourPop eye shadows!! They are so buttery, so pigmented, so blendable, and so affordable!! ColourPop Brown Sugar is a great little neutral toned palette. So is the Going Coconuts palette. I’ve only had these palettes for a week and I can’t get enough of them.
The Kat Von D Tattoo Liner is by far my favorite liquid liner. It glides on smoothly is opaque and dries down matte. It never feathers into the fine lines of my lids and it never fades. It’s a long lasting formula too.
Loreal Voluminous Base is a lash primer that I use anytime I am not using my tried and true Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black mascara. The only time I do not use it, is if I am testing out a new mascara. It really adds thickness and length to the lashes
The Balm Whats Your Type? mascara is slowly gaining my heart. It’s not as black or as voluptuous as the Carbon Black is, but it is a close enough comparison.
The Balm Mr. Write eyeliner in the color Seymour Datenights is flesh toned eyeliner that is great for the water line. It’s not as bright as the NYX FAUX Whites pencil is but it worked really well for today’s look. It’s just bright enough to give the water liner a little pop.
The Precisely Brow and the Wow Brow are my favorite brow products now. I haven’t even looked at my brow powder since trying these. ELF is killing it with products these days.
MAC Mineralize SkinFinish in Warm Rose is the most subtle highlighter I have ever tried. It’s not a glowly highlight, it’s more of a brightening highlighter that works good on smokey eye days. This one is a bit light for my skin in the colder months but looks amazing when I have a tan.
My NARS blush in Orgasm is a mini. This is the first time I am trying this cult classic and boy do I get the hype behind it!!! I just purchased the full size version. It’s prettiest coral blush I own, and I own heaps of coral blushes. It is my second favorite NARS blush (Dolce Vita being the first favorite).
The Kat Von D Everlasting Lip Pencils are some of my favorite formula. They are so creamy and pigmented and they stay put all day. In fact at the end of the day when my lipstick is gone these lip liners are still in place. They are so creamy that I have on occasion used them as a lipstick.
MAC Matte Lipstick in Velvet Teddy is my favorite nude lip. It’s painful for me to use because it was the first lipstick I tried by MAC and the person who introduced me to it was my best friend who passed away a few months ago. It’s a matte formula that doesn’t feel drying. Is it just me or do MAC lipsticks smell like cupcakes???
Well that’s all for now beauty babies. I hope the weekend finds you pain free, or as close to pain free as a spoonie can be, and having plenty of spoons.
Until next time dolls, remember to reserve a spoon for a bit of lipstick.
